Impact of a clinical pharmacist on ultrasound-guided venous thromboembolism screening in hospitalized COVID-19 patients: a pilot prospective study

Abstract Background The recognition, prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains a major challenge in the face recent COVID-19 pandemic which has been associated with significant cardiovascular, renal, respiratory hematologic complications related to hypercoagulability. There little literature thus far on utility screening ultrasound role clinical pharmacist treating these patients. Methods We present prospective pilot program thirty-one consecutive patients who were provided four extremity ultrasounds for VTE admission. This was coordinated by as part multidisciplinary approach. Quantitative qualitative data recorded goal describing screening. Data collected include demographics, information symptoms or signs at presentation, laboratory radiologic results during hospitalization from each individual electronic medical record. Results Nine presented VTE. Of nine patients, there twenty-two total clotted vessels, all asymptomatic. pharmacist, coordinator coagulopathy management team, drafted protocol anticoagulation prophylaxis therapy after findings. Conclusion hospitalized reveals number asymptomatic VTEs justifies diagnostic, prophylactic, measures pharmacist.
